Floki
Age:
3 1/2 year old Husky
Diagnosis:
Road traffic accident
Floki, a 3 ½ year old Husky, had experienced a RTA (road traffic accident) 6 weeks previous to coming to see us. While all acute health issues had settled nicely, he was still non weight baring lame on his left front leg. He had shattered his left humerus in the accident and an external fixator had been placed to stabilise the bone for it to heal.
Treatment:
When we started Physical Therapy with Floki, he showed a tremendous amount of muscle wastage an the entire front left leg. He was dragging or carrying the leg and not even making an effort to place the foot at all.
The challenge with Huskies is, that they think exercises are stupid and only for “pet” dogs. All they want to do is run!
The only exercise we really got good at was giving paw, to the point that every time he saw me he would just sit down and offer one or the other paw – without even being asked.
So we had to start thinking outside the box. We figured out that he would use his leg more when pulling on the lead uphill and we also ended up walking him on the treadmill with hardly any water in – that was the breakthrough.
Within the 6 month of rehabilitation Floki had a lot of ups and downs and the leg had “given up” several times in between. He had to have pins removed, a bone graft and we had to stop a contracture of the wrist. But it is amazing what can be achieved with a dedicated owner and an interdisciplinary approach of vets and rehab. Floki was signed off 6 months after his devastating accident, running about on all 4 legs and living his best life again.
